Global Fishing Watch

Global Fishing Watch is an international nonprofit organization founded in 2015 through a collaboration between Oceana, SkyTruth, and Google. Its mission is to promote sustainable ocean management by increasing transparency of human activity at sea. Utilizing satellite data, machine learning, and cloud computing, Global Fishing Watch provides open-access tools and datasets that allow users to monitor and analyze global fishing activity in near real-time.

The organization’s platform enables tracking vessel movements, identifying fishing patterns, and detecting illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities. By making this information publicly available, Global Fishing Watch aims to support scientific research, inform policy decisions, and foster accountability in the fishing industry.
