The Minneapolis riots following George Floyd’s murder on May 25, 2020, began with peaceful protests demanding justice and police reform. However, tensions escalated rapidly, leading to widespread unrest, including arson, looting, and the burning of the Minneapolis Police Department’s Third Precinct station.
n response, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz activated the National Guard on May 28, marking the first full mobilization in the state’s history. Despite these efforts, the unrest continued, resulting in over $500 million in property damage in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul area.
The protests also sparked a national dialogue on systemic racism and police brutality, leading to policy changes such as the Minneapolis City Council’s decision to ban chokeholds by police on June 5.
The events in Minneapolis served as a catalyst for a global movement, with demonstrations occurring in over 60 countries, highlighting the pervasive issues of racial injustice and the urgent need for reform.
